The Importance of Using Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil

Updated: Jul 23, 2020

You’ve probably seen coconut oil marketed in various health foods and beauty products, and if you’re already health conscious, it probably comes as no surprise as to why this oil gets as much hype as it does. Ingesting coconut oil can help burn fat, lower cholesterol, and reduce the risk of heart disease. And using it on your skin and for your hair can be a great natural option.

But not all coconut oil is created equal!

Have you ever noticed the different types of coconut oils? Virgin, refined, unrefined, organic, non-organic. What does all of this mean and which should you choose?

Organic vs non-organic

Whenever you’re deciding on something to put in your mouth or on your skin, it’s best to go with organic. This means that it has not been genetically modified and no pesticides were used in the growing process. The opposite is true for non-organic. What’s the big deal? If pesticides are used to grow the coconuts, it means the oils will contain those chemicals, and who wants to put pesticides on their face?

Bottom line, if organic is an option, choose organic.

The Importance Of Using Unrefined Coconut Oil

Unrefined coconut oil, also known as, “virgin coconut oil,” is minimally processed using little to no heat. Oil is obtained from fresh coconuts without any bleaching or the use of any chemicals. On the contrary, when coconut oil is refined, it goes through a process of deodorization and bleaching, often times using an intense chemical treatment. This process removes the medium-chain fatty acids and polyphenols which make it less effective as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Refined coconut oil can actually clog pores, leading to breakouts and skin irritation.

What Are The Benefits Of Unrefined Coconut Oil in Body Products?

Unrefined coconut oil contains phytonutrients, polyphenols, caprillic acid, and lauric acid making it an antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant, with the ability to eliminate free radicals. This type of oil encourages regeneration of cells, fights acne, and boost collagen production (fading wrinkles and tightening skin).

The vitamins and essential fatty acids also nourish the scalp and help hair grow thicker and longer. It's known for its ability to retain moisture, which in turn, decreases frizz, dandruff, and itchy scalp.

So keep this all in mind when you’re purchasing body products, especially for your skin. Try to find products that use strictly ORGANIC UNREFINED coconut oil.
